About our scholarship

OUR WHY

Mental health issues not only affect student's emotional well-being, but also have a significant impact on their academic success. A study by the Center of Disease Control (CDC) found that students who reported higher levels of emotional distress were more likely to have lower grades and miss school. In 2021, a concerning 57% of females students experience persistent sadness or hopelessness, with 13% of female students attempting suicide. Unstable housing and other social and economic factors can significantly impact teens' health and well-being, with 3% of students experiencing unstable housing in 2021. Among students who do not complete high school, over 20% prematurely ended their education because of mental health challenges.

OUR GOAL

We aim to eliminate the financial obstacles that often force young women to make an agonizing choice between their immediate survival and their future educational success. We aim to ensure that these young women have the opportunity to pursue higher education without financial constraints. That every girl that has struggled to get to where they are in life knows that they are worth it!

BEACON OF HOPE

We envision a future where these resilient young women not only overcome the burdens of trauma, mental illness, and academic challenges, but also achieve economic independence through higher education. Our hope is to empower them to break free from the cycle of adversity and realize their full potential. Together, we can light the way toward a brighter, more promising future for these courageous individuals, helping them overcome the statistics and thrive academically and emotionally.

Aliyah

I am absolutely thrilled to introduce you all to Aliyah, the remarkable winner of the I am Worth it Foundation's Fall 2023 scholarship! Aliyah's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with resilience, strength, and an unwavering spirit.

Aliyah's path hasn't been an easy one. She faced unimaginable hardships, including being homeless not once, but twice. Once in 7th grade and again in 12th grade. These experiences, though incredibly challenging, didn't shape her into who she is today, but rather the strength she has always had within her, helped her through these tough times.

But that's not all - Aliyah's story took yet another unexpected turn when she temporarily lost her vision in 8th grade. Can you imagine the strength it took to face such a hurdle? With unwavering determination, Aliyah overcame this obstacle with courage and grace. She truly embodies the spirit of resilience. However, through each experience, she struggled to pick herself up and suffered from dark thoughts which slowly took away her desire to live and took a toll on her mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Now, Aliyah is a Freshman at Meredith College and is majoring in communications with a focus on PR. It was important to Aliyah to go to college and to be in a position to break certain generational curses that hindered her family for years. Because of the struggles she experienced, she realized she wanted better for herself.

Aliyah's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, hope, and self-belief. She is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that no matter what challenges we face, we have the strength within us to overcome them.

Join me in congratulating Aliyah on this incredible achievement! Let's celebrate her triumphs and send her our love and support as she embarks on this new chapter of her life. Aliyah, we are an inspiration, and we can't wait to witness all the amazing things you'll accomplish. The future is yours!
